Rachel Atherton wins 2013 World MTB Championships in South Africa

Photos by Dirt MTB Magazine

Good news for a September Monday morning, Rachel Atherton has won the 2013 World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa with top contender Manon Carpenter crashing out on the slippery course. She last won the title in 2008 and currently leads the World Cup Series. Of her win she said:

It hasn’t sunk in yet, I’m exhausted, I was wondering if I’d ever win this World Championships again but I so wanted those stripes. In the middle section the crowd were roaring and I was just saying to myself, dig, dig, dig. So I dug!

Rachel will get to wear the stripes for the next year and to read her My Hero interview where she cites her big brother Dan as her big inspiration head here.

Here are some video highlights. Rachel Atherton comes in around 3:50 mins and her run is followed by an interview where she talks us through her underwear decision for the day. Nice knickers as if she won she’d get drug tested or not nice ones to avoid jinxing it?
