What: Billabong Girls Pro, ASP World Tour Women’s Event
Where: Barra da Tijuca Rio de Janeiro Brazil
When: 8 – 18 September 2008
Forget samba and football, the Brazilian town of Rio de Janeiro is set to become the home of surfing. The Billabong Girls Pro Rio will be kicking off on Rio’s fantastic beaches from September 8th-18th. More than 80 female wave riders from all over the globe will be fighting it out for a $105,000 in prize money and 1500 valuable ranking points.
After taking place for the last two years in Itacaré, organisers felt it was time for a change, and this year Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio will be home to the surfing action, with Macumba beach set up as an alternative if surfing conditions at Barra beach are not good enough.
“Rio de Janeiro was for many years the centre of the greatest surfing competitions in Brazil and we are very pleased to bring a big event like this back to the city,” says Gustavo Belloc, Billabong Brazil Marketing Manager.
The Billabong Girls Pro consists of two competitions: a ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) contest, and the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).
The 11th stop of the World Qualifying Series tour, which takes place on September 8th and 9th, will be attended by athletes from all over the globe, who will be fighting for 1,500 points and $20,000 prize money; while the 17 selected surfers who are the world’s surf elite will fight it out for $85,000 in prize money and valuable ranking points on the 4th stop of the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour.
