And the whole surfing in the Olympics thing, do you think the wave pool in Bristol will help, do you plan to go there a lot?
Yesss! I think it’s been a long time coming, and I’m absolutely stoked that Nick from the Wave Garden has managed to pull this off after all the hard work he’s put in. Because if anywhere in the surfing world needs a wave pool then we do! I’m hoping to be able to get up there a lot when it’s up and running, would be cool to run some surf sessions there for the groms too. Once the Wave Garden is up and running who’s to say we couldn’t run international surfing events there. I think it’s going to be a major push for surfing to join the Olympic Games.
Did you get any surfs in during the winter storms? Any good stories to tell?
Between you and me, St.Ives goes off during the winter storms! Because of all the little cheeky coves we have around St.Ives Bay, there’s always somewhere you can shelter from the crazy strong winds or huge swells when the winter swells come by. Waaaa Cornwall would be the sickest surf destination if we could just have our Winter Swells combined with our Summer temperatures…. I’m missing those mean swells right now!
How’s the women’s UK scene right now?
The women’s UK Scene is pretty good right now, there’s a lot of girls who came up just below my generation who are shredding, but the biggest shame is that there is no one below that age that appears to be coming up. This is where my passion for teaching the girls in St.Ives started out. Some of them just really do it for the fun of it, meeting new girls, and enjoying getting in the sea. But some of them are going to be real little champions if they stick with it, and right now I can tell they really want it! I’m going to keep supporting them in any way I can so hopefully they can hit the comp scene when they’re ready and take everyone by surprise!
