We’ve already heard all about riding snowboards without highbacks, but surfing without finns? Sounds like a pretty slippery slope if you ask us, but find out for yourselves as the UK is holding it’s first ever finless surf competition: the Slyder Cup at Lusty Glaze, Cornwall on April 13th 2013!
A coming together of the alternative surf scene, The Slyder Cup celebrates the art of waveriding from a finless perspective. Part competition, part social gathering the festivities will continue into the evening with music, art, awards and an exclusive UK film premiere hosted in conjunction with Reef.
Championing the underground and celebrating the creativity that exists in our culture, The Slyder Cup takes surfing back to its roots, bringing together the fins free tribe.
With an emphasis on good vibes, good rides and good times, the contest consists of four categories: body surf /handplane; paipo /bellyboard; surf mat; alaia/finless board with a winner crowned in each as well as an overall Slyder Cup Champion. Entry is open to all but places are limited and available online on a first come, first serve basis.
Open to beach entries, the ‘Run What You Brung’ expression session will see competitors showcase a diverse range of fins free wavesliding vehicles – the only limit on what you can ride is in the parameters of your skill and imagination. The Slyder Cup will also play host to the first edition of The Shaper’s Shield, an invitational challenge that will see a selection of the UK’s top shapers showcasing their own interpretation on the finless brief, ridden by their ‘designated drivers’.
