Humans are naturally attracted to shiny things, a bit like flies being attracted to the blue light, which is probably why we all love glitter. Every time you decide to put glitter on your face for your favourite festival however, do you know that you’re actually contributing to damaging your environment and killing marine life?
Glitter is actually made of little tiny pieces of plastic and even more than that, it’s one of the worst kinds of plastic because of its size. As glitter plastic is so small you can never clear it up properly and guess what, this means it can never be disposed of properly either. As it’s a micro-plastic, glitter will always find its way into our ocean and therefore is small enough to reach any animal’s gullet.
Think about how many times you can use glitter as well, just once. It can’t even be re-used like a plastic tub or other plastic items. That makes all glitter instantly become trash, where it is non-biodegradable and too tiny to be filtered out during sewage treatment.
