There’s a lot of trash out there in the world of female surfing. For every surf video of a woman actually shredding it up, there’s another ten of women posing in tiny bikinis and going nowhere near the water. It often feels as though the surf world is more interested in using female surfers to sell bikinis, than it is in repping female athleticism and women in action sports.
This is why we’re so happy about this short film from Sanuk and Billabong surfer Lauren Hill on the reality of surfing and surf culture from a female point of view. From the endless scroll of perfect bodies on Instagram, to the pain of trying to get out of your wetsuit unscathed, there’s nothing in the film that we haven’t all experienced before. The question is, why has it taken so long to see it on screen?…
