This Woman Was Told She Shouldn’t Surf By Her Community… But That Didn’t Stop Her

“After a woman gets married, her husband doesn’t like her going to the beach. He doesn’t let her surf as she might show her body”

Oumaima Erhali is one inspirational woman. Brought up in the Muslim country of Morocco, she gets to surf some of the best waves in the country every day.

However, surfing is not a pastime her community believes is appropriate for a young Muslim woman.

I don’t want to get married. I’ll go abroad and open a surf club…

She became the first female coastguard in the country and now surfs in her spare time.

This beautiful mini film from Grain Media shows Oumaima’s stoke for the sport and explains why she’s going to pursue her passion, regardless of what others say.

“I don’t want to get married,” she says in the film. “I will go abroad and open a surf club.” Good on you, Oumaima!
