Where To Go Winter Surfing If You’re A Normal Person Who Can’t Afford Bali or The Gold Coast

The winter waves are waiting for you, you just need to know where to look...

Every surfer knows the feeling of being out in the water at the end of summer, knowing that the season is about to finish.

The very lucky surfers among us will already have plans in place to jet off to the Gold Coast and catch some waves in the winter months.

For the rest of us however, its a choice between an empty savings account or a long wait till next summer, right?

Well actually, no.

There are some great surf spots to visit over the winter months with amazing waves, that don’t cost the earth to get to!

The Algarve

Portugal is only a couple of hours away an a plane, but most winters stay warm enough that you can get away with your 3/2mm well into November.

The waves in the Algarve are pretty decent all year round, but its the quiet, colder part of the year when they really come into their own. Stick around Sagres and Lagos, or hire a van and have a little surf safari around the coast, youre going to find some awesome surf.

This area of the world is nicely priced to get to from the UK generally, but in the winter? So cheap.

Check in with these guys for some rad accommodation, while your out there.

Ireland

Any surfer worth their salt knows that Ireland boasts some of the best waves in the world for those who dare to brave them.

The location for many big swell hunters, these waters require a thicker suit, but more than make up for that in surf.

A flight from the UK to Ireland? I mean, come on- you can pay the same amount on a train to London.

Check out Rossnowlagh, Tullan and Bundoran to discover where your perfect conditions are hiding.

Famara Beach

The Canaries reputation for being the Hawaii of the Atlantic and another great one for winter sun.

Lanzarote is a favourite for many winter surf courses and among it’s bays, Famara is at the top. Expect blue skies and double overhead conditions, along with line ups without the crowds.

Slightly further out, this destination is still a million times cheaper than its contemporaries in Australia and Bali.!

Morocco

Yes, Africa is pretty far away. However morocco is still by no stretch of the imagination, a super pricey destination.

The well known surf school SurfMorocc, is open for most of the winter season, for those who want to give surfing a go and the bed space near the beach is dirt cheap for those of us who just want to grab a board and get in the water.

Whether you fly straight to the swell, or give Marrakesh an explore first, this holiday will feel like it should cost you a lot more dolla’ than it actually does.

The UK

Of course, let’s not forget this important fact – Winter surf in our own UK aint too shabby.

The big tourist destinations in Newquay and North Devon are all but deserted by the time September rolls around, meaning that those crowded lineups and kids on spider man bodyboards are a distant memory.

Sure, the weather will almost certainly be shit and the coastline isn’t quite as idyllic as Hanauma Bay, but the waves will be awesome and there’s nothing like warming yourself up in a proper pub, post session.
