The Tongariro National Park in New Zealand has a hike called the Northern Circuit. It takes three to four days as you make your way around two active volcanoes.

5) Kalalau Trail, Kauai, Hawaii

This trail on the island of Kauai is only 11 miles – but you can be assured that it’s one of the most spectacular hikes in the Pacific.

Make sure you check the weather before you go as it’s notoriously dangerous for flash flooding.

8) Camino de Santiago, Northern Spain

The Camino de Santiago is a famous network of route following an ancient pilgrim trail from France along the northern Spanish coastline.

It’s good value for money as accommodation is cheap, the food is fantastic and you’ll meet some amazingly hospitable people along the way.

9) Everest Base Camp, Nepal

Again, it’s one you’ve probably heard of but definitely need to tick off the list.

Hiking to the dizzying heights of 5,545m at Everest Base Camp takes three weeks, so it is not for the unfit or faint hearted.

10) West Coast Trail, Vancouver Island, Canada

This seven-day hike off the Pacific Coast of Canada is a fantastic journey through forests, bogs and beaches.

Keep your eyes peeled for black bears, wolves and eagles – as there are plenty around.

Make sure you buy a permit before you go (if you’re planning on camping) as only a certain number of people are allowed on the trail at one time.
