Don’t get us wrong, we love pictures of sunkissed 70s Cali skater kids and Ed Templeton’s latest instagram update from Huntington beach, but let’s face it, we’re stuck in slightly less sunny England. Which is why this week’s cult photographer is local hero Gavin Watson.
Watson started taking pictures of his friends and family in Wycombe, Middle England, in the late 70s when he was 14. Most of his mates were into skinhead culture and Oi! music then, but Watson also took pictures of punks and went with the times when the prevalent youth cultural style shifted towards rave in the late 80s.
His books Skins and Skins and Punks are hugely influential youth/subculture classics, inspiring not only countless fashion shoots (including some of our own) but also Shane Meadows’ acclaimed film and later TV series This is England (well worth watching btw).
We’re particularly in love with Watson’s super photogenic and always impeccably styled little brother Neville, who didn’t only know how to rock a Harrington jacket and bovver boots but also majorly contributed to the success of his big brother’s books. Here’s Neville Watson at his best:
