Laura Enever: “I want 12 year old girls to not feel like they have to be sex symbols to be a surfer”

And why she kinda hates monkeys

Laura Enever is the latest female pro surfer to take part in The Inertia’s often excellent Headspace video series. If you need a refresher, Headspace brought us Carissa Moore saying: You hear comments like, ‘She’s had one too many cheeseburgers,’ and it’s hurtful you know [CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL INTERVIEW].

We also loved the Kassia Meador interview in which she told us: Some people need sex appeal to turn them onto something, some people want to see performance…I want to see girls surfing well [CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL INTERVIEW].

And now we have a shorter interview with Laura Enever, which was recorded last summer but just released now in which she says: The sexiest a woman can be is confident. All I want is for 12 year old girls who want to surf to not have to feel like they have to be some sort of sex symbol to be a surfer. I don’t think that’s the right thing and I don’t want a girl to have to feel like that.

Wise words which we are very much down with. In fact it’s been our biggest gripe about the whole sexing up of surfing in the past year, which we’ve talked about HERE and HERE. The comments section below Laura’s video of course made us despair for the human race as it often does but we like the sentiment (though the wetsuit off the shoulder look confused us almost as much as it excited the dudes in the comments section!) and the rest of the interview is quite sweet too.
