This Amazing Zero-Waste Supermarket Has No Plastic Packaging Or Big-Name Brands

Do you find yourself getting annoyed by how much plastic packaging there is in supermarkets nowadays?

12 million tonnes of food waste is dumped in land fills each year

Everything from fruit and vegetables to cheese and pasta is covered in plastic wrapping – that can’t be recycled and just ends up in the bin.

According to these studies, 12 million tonnes of food waste is dumped in land fills every year. That’s around a third of food which is bought – 75 per cent of which could be prevented, if there was a more efficient system in place.

This is exactly why German duo Sara Wolf and Milena Glimbovski decided to start up their own supermarket.

Original Unverpackt in Berlin, Germany is a zero-waste supermarket – which means they’ve gotten rid of all disposable packaging.

Everything from fruit, vegetables, pasta, dry grains can be bought using large refillable containers. Even shampoo and soap.

Sara and Milena used crowd funding to make their sustainable dream a reality and take ethical shopping (fronted by big companies like Whole Foods Market) to the next level.

The aim of Original Unverpackt is not only to reduce the amount of packaging we use, but also encourage people to buy only what they need.

It’s not exactly cheap to shop at the Original Unverpackt.

Most of the products are organic therefore prices are higher, but one German newspaper reported that plenty of the food was equal or cheaper than your standard supermarket.

We can only hope more groceries across Europe (and the world) will one day follow suit.
