“You’re obsessed with Adriene,” moaned my boyfriend one evening. “You spend more time with her than you do with me.”
The truth is I am a little obsessed with Adriene.
Ever since I started practicing yoga at university, I’ve been hooked. The trouble is, when I move from place to place, it’s difficult to find the perfect class.
Even if you’ve really not liked yoga in the past, it’s totally worth giving one of Adriene’s videos a go…
Some are too meditational for me, others too far away, sometimes the teacher just doesn’t quite suit.
Who is Adriene?
Adriene Mischler is her name. She comes from Austin, Texas. She’s an actress and a yoga instructor.
She runs a YouTube channel with free yoga classes for you to practice at home. They range from beginner tutorials to forty minute vinyasa sessions.
Her videos don’t take the whole practice too seriously. She gets that maybe you’re not that into the hippy-dippy spiritual side of yoga (but also embraces it if you do!)
That’s my idea of a good yoga tutor. Plus she has some really awesome leggings.
Where should you start?
I would say crack on with the Gentle Morning Yoga video. It’s only twenty minutes long and the poses are relatively gentle. It also gives you a good sense of her kooky style.
If you’re already quite active but want to do something to stretch after running or skiing or whatever you’ve been doing, try her Yoga for Runners Cool Down Sequence.
You also don’t need any fancy kit. Just a yoga mat, or even a towel works if you’re just starting out.
It’s definitely worth trying her 30 Days of Yoga challenge. I know, yoga every day sounds like a lot. It was actually surprisingly easy; I found myself wanting to get on the mat each morning.
It starts off quite mellow, gently building to harder moves as your strength increases. More difficult, testing sessions balanced out by more restorative, lets-lie-on-our-backs practices.
Even if you’ve never tried yoga before, it’s totally worth giving one of Adriene’s videos a go. You might like it, even if you’ve hated other yoga classes in the past.
I honestly feel better now every time I hop on the mat. Just don’t tell my boyfriend I’ve gone and bought one of her t-shirts….
