Yogis – they are all super skinny, uber flexible women in their twenties, right? Well, not quite…
There’s a brilliant movement sweeping Instagram right now that we’re absolutely loving. Introducing #CurvyYoga.
We’ve all got preconceptions about how certain people should look. Runners are all tall and leggy. Surfers all have ripped abs and pert bottoms. The same goes for yoga.
We’re conditioned to think all yogis look the same, when actually everyone needs to appreciate that we’re all shapes and sizes. It doesn’t matter how we’re born – we can still take part in yoga, just like everyone else.
“We are shown as a society that having a curvaceous body is a problem, that it’s something you have to change,” curvy yogi Jessamyn Stanley told Pacific Standard Magazine.
“We’re just now getting to a point, because of Beyoncé, where people are comfortable seeing thick thighs and a curvaceous butt.”
If you search the hashtag #CurvyYoga on Instagram, you’ll find over 30,000 photos of voluptuous women practicing yoga and breaking moulds about women should and shouldn’t look like.
“I used to think yoga for was skinny Minnie’s and flexie Lexie’s but now I know it’s for everyone,” says one user @mermaidfaery.
The body-embracing trend is spreading and we love it. Just check out this article in the New York Times.
The best part of this movement is the message that yoga is for everyone. So, who’s ready to jump on their mat?
