How did you get into surfing?
I was raised on the beach in a small community called Solimar, so I was always very comfortable in the water. I have three older brothers who took up surfing and I decided to give it a try too.
When did you decide to commit yourself to the surfing full time?
When I decided to drop out of college and pursue professional surfing. I wanted to give 100% of my time to the sport.
Do you consider yourself to be an adrenaline junkie?
Not really. I love the mindless surfing….When I can just go out there, surf, not think and have fun.
Can you give us a run down of your average day?
On a usual day I’ll wake up, grab some coffee and check the waves. If it’s looking good, I’ll spend the day surfing but if there aren’t any waves I’ll find something else active to do. The perfect day would be surfing my favorite local spot with a few of my closest friends on a day when the sun is shinning and the water is warm.
What’s your favourite surf spot?
Definitely my home break or Rincon.
What are your plans for this summer?
Traveling to Mexico. I have a few big events I will be attending up and down the coast as well as a big contest in France in July.
How do you prepare for a big competition?
I always take a few minutes to sit alone and watch the surf. I try to imagine me out there surfing and doing my thing.
Do you still get nervous before a big contest?
Yes, always. I try not to but if I’m in the money rounds it’s hard not to get too nervous.
What is the atmosphere like behind the scenes?
Fun. Most of the girls like each other and we’re all friends; we are all rooting for each other.
What are your suitcase essentials when you’re on the road?
My iPod, my small make-up bag with my toiletry goodies, Patagonia gear that I can crumple up and throw in my handy Patagonia travel bag, bathing suits, my computer and my boards…
What have been your biggest career setbacks?
I have been really fortunate with my career and the companies backing me. My only setbacks would be trying to make a bit more money to save up!
And what have your greatest achievements been so far?
Co-authoring a book, winning various competitions and being able to do what I love to do, which is travel and surf.
Who or what are your inspirations?
My brothers and anyone who is living life out of the ordinary.
What affect does your career have on your personal life?
Maintaining a love life is always a challenge as I am traveling so much. I also only get to see my hometown friends randomly from time to time, but most people are pretty understanding. Dating is definitely the hardest… it’s hard to find the right guy.
How do you relax when you get the chance?
I love to hang out at my house… relaxing on the deck or the beach.
