It’s always a great feeling when you find someone who shares your love of adventure and your passion in your chosen sport, so we’re guessing it must be pretty wonderful to end up marrying them.
Hannah Maia and her husband Patrick met as climbers and have been adventuring together for the last 10 years, before getting married last year.
17 Things You Only Realise When You Move Away From London
When they decided to tie the knot, a badass honeymoon was clearly the way to go and Hannah filmed the whole three month adventure as they travelled.
The resulting film, Megamoon, which started off as a personal record, has now won multiple awards and is being shown at film festivals around the world…
“We love going on adventures, climbing and canoeing,” says Hannah.
“When we decided to get married, Patrick applied for some sabbatical leave and had three months away from his job, so we thought ‘lets have some kind of really epic honeymoon.'”
The planning stages happily coincided with one of Hannah’s own personal adventures, which took the couple overseas to Arizona.
knew this route called ‘the great divide’ which runs right across the spine of the rocky mountains in America
“I had applied to paddle down the grand canyon!” says Hannah.
“There used to be a 24 year waiting list, but in recent times they’ve turned it into a lottery permit and I got one first time!”
“Suddenly we were planning our honeymoon around the desert in Arizona. We padded the rest of the honeymoon from there. ”
The couple decided to spend three months biking across the desert in America.
“We love bikes and we knew this route called ‘the great divide’ which runs right across the spine of the rocky mountains in America.”
“We thought wow, we’ll paddle the Grand Canyon, get out and haul our little trailers across that route!”
While filming all through the honeymoon, Hannah had no grand plans for the footage at the time.
“I make films for a living so I knew I had the skills, but ultimately I was just happy filming and being behind the camera.”
Once you put yourself out there, sometimes you find that experiences that come back at you are incredible
“I knew it was great for our personal memories and I thought, anything else that comes from it would be a bonus.”
Since their return however, the film has been received amazingly all over the UK, being shown and nominated for the people’s choice award at Kendall Bank Film Festival and winning silver in the Spirit of Adventure award at Sheffield Film Festival.
“It was amazing watching the film on thebig screen for the first time at Kendall Bank film festival last November” says Hannah.
“It was so good to watch it with an audience, you see bits that they’re laughing at and where they’re smiling, its really rewarding.”
Since the film has been received so well, the couples next adventure is somewhat different to any they’ve had before.
“It’s been announced on the Kendall world tour, so next stop will be China!” Hannah says.
“It’s getting translated into Chinese at the moment and Patrick and I are flying out to China in November to introduce the film.”
“It’s amazing. Once you put yourself out there sometimes you find that experiences that come back at you are incredible.”
