Charlotte Smith, designer and founder of new super rad eco clothing label Roam and Seek, chats about her love of snowboarding, adventure and baking
Fill your life with all the things you love. For me it’s a random mix of snowboarding, baking and design.
I’ve always been an active person and willing to give things a try. l’ve tried netball, 5-a-side football, tennis, badminton, even ping-pong. I’ve swam, rock-climbed, abseilled, mountain biked, shot a bow and arrow, rowed, skated and skied.
Three years ago I started snowboarding. First it was a few trips to the Snow Dome with friends and then a holiday to Morzine in the French Alps, and I was hooked. My boyfriend and I then sold everything we had, put what was left into storage and got on a flight to the Canadian Rockies to live in a small mountain town called Banff.
In six months l went from nursery slopes to double diamonds. l learnt to slow down, clear my head and focus, and it was during this time l also started to bake.
I’ve always been a bit of foodie. As a kid you could always find me in the kitchen, watching and waiting for my chance to lick the bowl. I’m not sure whether at the time it was baking or eating that l loved more!
When we returned to London my new found love of baking stuck with me. My cakes caught the eye of the event manager at a friends’ wedding and in the following months ‘Charlotte Made a Cake’ was established. I’ve since done a series of commissions and have two more in the pipeline.
Alongside ‘Charlotte made a cake’ I’m also Co-Founder of Roam and Seek clothing. It was during my degree studying design and illustration that I learnt to silk-screen print and it’s this method we use to create most of our products.
Roam and Seek is our London based, adventure inspired clothing label that some friends and I started earlier this year. We like to celebrate people’s sense of adventure and this inspires our designs. We all have adventures, big or small, on foot or on a board, whether it’s skating through your local park or going back-country in the Rockies, it all counts!
With Roam and Seek we want to give people quality clothing with unique designs that are eco-friendly and good value. We don’t mass produce, we print and hand finish everything to order and this gives all our clothing a real personal touch.
Part of what we do is collaborate with other artists and designers to give them a platform to be seen and appreciated. So far we’re featuring artists from South Africa, Germany and of course the UK.
It’s been an awesome first few months and we’re really thankful for all the support we’ve had so far. We just want people to enjoy wearing our designs, be inspired and get out there and have an adventure.
I can’t imagine not snowboarding, baking or designing, they are the things l love that make up my life. I smile at the thought that in years to come l’ll be an old lady riding the hill, after having a slice of homemade cake and a cup of tea, in Roam & Seek apparel of course.
