Under blazing sunshine and the most perfect conditions you could wish for, the annual British championships, THE BRITS, went down in Laax last week and had many a happy winner to crown!
It all started off with the Freeski Halfpipe and the Trespass Snowboardcross comps on Tuesday, that were dominated by BRITS newbie Janina Kuzma on skis, who impressed with her huge safety grab and 540 to start her winning run, and Maisie Potter from Wales came first on her snowboard in both her age group and overall.
The Wednesday continued with the Trespass Skiercross and Snowboard Halfpipe, that was rocked by Pamela Thorburn on skis, closely followed by Liz Stevenson and Becky Hammond, and Kate Foster ahead of Katie Ormerod and Becky Menday in the pipe.
On Thursday, the girls had some surprises in stock for the Protest Slopestyle Championships, where first place qualifier Rowan Cheshire crashed out on both of her runs leaving the door wide open – an opportunity immediately seized by Chloe Hardy, who threw down two very clean 360’s, two straight airs, a slide on the big tube and a hit on the flat down box, something no other girl did in the comp. The snowboarding ladies on the other hand pushed the standard of women’s riding even further at the Big Air comp, with some huge spins off the big kicker, on the forefront 14-year-old Katie Ormerod who had already proved her exceptional riding level at the Roxy Pro earlier this year.
The week was rounded off with the Freeski Big Air that gave Molly Summerhayes her first BRITS gold medal for three solid runs, including a floaty 360, 720 and an impressive 900, and the Protest Snowboard Slopestyle Championships with another victory by prodigy Katie Ormerod.
