What a question to ask! Do you want to write about the Estoril Billabong Girls event in Portugal? Hell yeah I want, when’s my flight?
In fact that was the only unpleasant thing about this trip: leaving Munich 6 am isn’t the best time, no matter what destination. But it was far more than well worth it!
After arriving in Lisbon I was amazed about the effort that was put up for the girls. Parallel to the only 6 star event of the ASP World Qualifying Series in Europe, the ‘Rock Sisters’ Rita and Joana Rocha also organised the 10th edition of the famous Billabong Girls Days in Estoril.
While 150 girls of all ages, skills, backgrounds, colours and shapes tried their first steps on a surfboard or honed their skills with the help of pro surfers like Joana Rocha, Joana Andrade and Patricia Lopes, the 60 competing pro surfers were keen to validated how perfect their skills actually are at the Billabong Girls WQS event.
In Estoril and Cascais, near the capital Lisbon, they tried to gather important points for the World Qualifying Series to maybe be able to fulfil their dream in the following year that is to surf the ASP World Tour.
In the end it was Australian Sally Fitzgibbons who took the lead in a dramatic final, defeating Hawaiian surfer chick Coco Ho.
