In their debut performance on Roxy equipment, Snowboarder Torah Bright and freeskier Sarah Burke both claimed gold medals for their performance in the 2007 Winter X Games Superpipe competitions.
Olympiad snowboarder Torah Bright and freeskiing trailblazer Sarah Burke took charge of the Superpipe finals in snowboarding and skiing, taking the gold medal in each of their events and showing the power of the Roxy Snow team. Bright, a four time X Games veteran and Burke, having competed for eight years, each took the gold for the first time this year on Roxy equipment. The addition of the team’s talented skiers makes the Roxy Snow team the first combined all-women’s snowboard/ski team in the world.
“These girls represent a new frontier for women on the mountain,” said Randy Hild, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing for Roxy. “The passion they share is the same one we support as a company: to push the boundaries, perception and prestige of women in action sports. We look forward to sharing many successes with them, and kicking it off with two gold medals at the X Games is a great way to get started.”
Snowboarder Torah Bright made the most of her new head-to-toe sponsorship with Roxy by nailing her second run this year, taking the highest score of the event with a 94.66 and solidifying her lead for the gold medal. Known for her style and creatively progressive runs, Torah credited her new Roxy “Magne-Traction” board for helping her stick her impressive final run. Having just made equipment sponsorship with the brand official, the Winter X Games provided the perfect venue to show her honed skills. No stranger to success at the X Games, in 2006 she won a silver medal for what many are calling the most technical women’s Pipe combo in history-a “backside 360” to a “switch backside 540” and a “switch frontside 720.”
“I was really excited to come to the X Games and show everyone what I could do on one of the most important stages for snowboarding in the world,” said Bright. “I really felt like I had my best run ever. I got my all my technical trick combinations down, all with good amplitude. Winning the gold medal is amazing, and to win it on Australia day is the icing on the cake.”
Landing the biggest move of the night, freeskier Sarah Burke nailed her first place win with a huge “900.” Not holding back after scoring a 65 in her first run, she laid it all on the line to score a 90 in her second run and take first place. Burke landed the first “720” in competition back in 2003 at the Global X Games’ first-ever Women’s Ski Superpipe. No stranger to winning, she later went on to grab the silver medal at the 2005 X Games. A pioneer of female freeskiing, she earned her reputation as one of the world’s best skiers by first competing against the guys.
Upon winning, Burke said: “I love being in the air. As soon as skiers started doing this kind of stuff, I got right into it. I never thought things would end up like this though…My wildest dreams are coming true. Winning a gold medal at the Winter X Games means that all of my hard work and desire to promote women in freeskiing has been worth it.”
