Wait Continues With Another Lay Day at Billabong Pro Maui

What: Billabong Pro Maui Presented by Hawaiian Airlines, ASP Women’s World Tour Event #8

Where: Honolua Bay Maui Hawaii

When: 8-20 December 2007

After a brief pulse which saw some solid sets break through Honolua Bay, the swell then dropped once again, prompting event organizers to call the Billabong Pro Maui presented by Hawaiian Airlines off for Wednesday.

The final event of the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Billabong Pro Maui requires only one full day of competition to complete the event, and with little forecasted swell on tap until later this week, the call was made to postpone the event until improved conditions.

“The small pulse in swell that we experienced last night has all but dissipated this morning and we’ve called competition off,” ASP Head Judge Richie Porta said yesterday. “We have a good long waiting priod and with just one more full day of competition left to complete the event, we’ll be waiting for proper conditions to present themselves.”

Following the opening two rounds of competition so far, the Billabong Pro Maui has seen the remaining ASP Women’s World Title contenders Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Sofia Mulanovich (PER) and Silvana Lima (BRA) all advance through to Round 3 with impressive performances at Honolua Bay. The Billabong Pro Maui is the final event of the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour and will decide who will be crowned the 2007 ASP Women’s World Champion. With the three contenders still remaining in the Billabong Pro Maui competition, the stakes will be high when the ladies hit the water once again.

In addition to the hunt for the ASP Women’s World Title, the Vans Triple Crown is coming to a close at Honolua Bay, with frontrunners Mulanovich and Megan Abubo (HAW) tied for the lead. Both Abubo and Mulanovich have each claimed one event in the Vans Triple Crown, and will finish their showdown in Maui.

All Billabong Pro Maui action will be webcast LIVE via the Billabong and ASP websites.

Next call will be at 7am today – fingers crossed the swell will arrive before Santa does!
