“Hope Echoes” is an autobiographical journey of the artist Casey O’Connell. It is her coming of age, ghosts from the past laid to rest, and a celebration of dreams brought to life. The subject matter as well as the subject have matured and the self-proclaimed “12-year old girl trapped in a woman’s body” has emerged to claim her personal space.
Her figures celebrate raw emotion, energy and style as they transcend their highly textural surroundings. There is a voyeuristic quality imposed by the scale of the medium-to-large sized paintings that further increase their impact. These beings displaying a mixture of defiance, triumph, and vision—transmit their joyful spirit through O’Connell’s signature style, and a bold, enlivened color palette.
Born in 1979 in Florida, Casey O’Connell received her B.A. in 2001 from Flagler College; she currently lives and works in St. Augustine, FL. Solo exhibitions of her work include: When Freckles Collide, Google Headquarters, Mountain View, CA (2008); Five More Minutes, Jennifer Marie Gallery, Las Vegas, NV (2008); This Time Will Be Different, Hotel des Arts, San Francisco (2007); Selected group exhibitions include: No Horse Play in the Train Station, 5 Claude Lane Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2010); Sixteen Days, Subject Matter Gallery, Costa Mesa, CA (2006); New Paintings, Black Market Gallery, Culver City, CA (2006).
