Pro chat: Nikki Van Dijk, surfer

We first saw her as a young grom in First Love and now the Aussie ripper has landed a spot on next year’s ASP Women’s World Tour. We thought it high time we had a chat

Hey Nikki. Congrats on qualifying for the ASP Women’s World Tour in 2014, has it sunk it yet?
Heyy!! Thank you so much! I am so so so excited! Yes it definitely has sunk in now haha

What’s been the hardest part this year on the WQS?
Of course surfing against all the girls as there are so many strong surfers on the QS these days, but one of the hardest parts was desperately wanting to succeed and then having setbacks. Having to overcome those setbacks for sure makes you stronger and hungrier.

What are you most looking forward to about the tour?
Causing some trouble against the top girls haha. I just can’t wait to surf and show everyone how I can surf in great waves and take it to the top girls in the world!

We first saw you in First Love, how was being a part of that movie?
First Love was a fun time and I love how I can look back at that time of my life in a movie haha. I think it really opened my eyes to wanting to be the best person I could be for myself and everyone around me. I’m not sure it changed my career as Making the tour has always been a dream of mine but inspiring young boys and girls is amazing and I love to help them however I can!

Who’s going to win this year’s tour and why?
Wow I don’t even know it is so so close! Carissa [Moore] and Tyler [Wright] are both incredible surfers both in their own way I can’t choose! :O

Which surfers style do you admire the most and why?
Steph Gilmore’s style I have always admired just because she is so graceful and flowy yet so strong and Mick Fanning of course, no explanation needed!

Have you ever surfed a wave pool?
No I’ve never! Although I am currently in France and about an hour away from the new wave garden which I’m super excited to go and surf in the next few weeks!

Would you like to see contests in wave pools in the future if it meant more dependable conditions?
For sure I mean I haven’t surfed a wave pool yet so I can’t really say but who knows in 10 years it could be such a possibility. Surfing is so natural though and you’re in the hands of mother nature which is why surfing is so unique and natural so maybe, maybe not in contests.

Where’s your favourite place to surf?
I love Trestles in California, Keramas in Indonesia and home [Phillip Island, Australia] is amazing too!

And your favourite contest?
To watch I think Pipe and to surf in I definitely loved the World Juniors at Keramas in Indonesia!

What would be your dream stop on the tour?
For sure Trestles and Keramas haha. PERFECT waves!

Anything else you’d like to chat about?
Just having F U N!
