Girls gathered together in the sunshine for the first of three Animal Surf Academy Girls Only days. The Saturday in Polzeath greeted the girls with the first sunny day for weeks and small but great surf for learning and getting extra tips from the Animal team riders. Sunday stayed dry and the girls benefited from the small clean surf on Tolcarne Beach.
After a quick meet and greet introducing the ASA surf instructors, and Animal team rider Nicola Bunt, the girls took to the waves. The group was split into ability levels meaning that each girl got the advice and encouragement they needed – Nicola helped the more advanced surf girls with turning and other techniques, while guest competitive surfer Jo Dennison gave the first time surf chicks all the encouragement they needed to get up and riding in their first session.
After all the action in the water the girls re-fuelled with a delicious beach picnic and listened in on Nicola & Jo’s tips and advice on the best surf equipment, boards and wetsuits to get started with. Then it was time to stretch out and relax with expert yoga teacher Lucy Aldridge who had the whole room giggling as they tried out yoga for the first time, but felt the benefits of stretching and warming down after a fun session in the surf!
Girls from all over the country came down to join the ASA Girls Only Days – from as far a-field as Dorset, Wales and the Midlands – and everyone went home tired but happy they had come, and having learnt some new things from the Animal team riders and the ASA surf instructors.
